Discovering lice in your child’s hair can feel overwhelming, but staying calm is the best first step. Head lice are very common among school-aged children and do not reflect poor hygiene or parenting. Acting quickly and carefully can make the process much easier for both you and your child.
Begin by confirming the presence of lice or nits using a fine-toothed lice comb under bright lighting. Once confirmed, choose an appropriate treatment, either an over-the-counter lice shampoo or a doctor-recommended option. Follow the instructions closely to ensure the treatment works effectively.
After treatment, comb through the hair carefully to remove remaining lice and eggs. Wash bedding, hats, brushes, and recently worn clothing in hot water, and vacuum furniture and carpets to reduce the risk of reinfestation. There is no need to deep-clean the entire house, as lice cannot survive long away from the scalp.
Most importantly, reassure your child. Avoid panic or embarrassment, and explain that many children experience lice at some point. With patience, consistency, and proper care, the issue can usually be resolved within days.
