My husband Dave has a strange dynamic with his mom. She calls him for anything, and he always drops everything to help her. I used to think it was kind of sweet—until the day I went into labor.
I was 38 weeks along when the contractions started, so we rushed to the hospital. At first, everything was fine, but about six hours later, Dave’s phone rang. He stepped out to answer and came back looking stressed. Then he got a text and became even more anxious.
I asked, “What’s going on?” and he said, “I need to go. It’ll be quick, I promise.” He kissed my forehead and just left. I felt COMPLETELY abandoned.
Later, he texted me saying his mom needed help. I thought it was something serious, but no—it was just heavy groceries! He left me alone during labor and even told me not to be selfish. I was furious and heartbroken.
Thankfully, my dad rushed over and stayed with me. He held my hand as I gave birth to our beautiful daughter. The hospital staff were wonderful, and my dad was my rock.
When Dave finally showed up, we were gone. He called and texted, but I ignored him. Then came the twist he never expected: he rushed home and went pale the moment he walked into the kitchen.
