Tragedy struck the Cariri region on the morning of Sunday, July 16, shattering its quiet countryside. A family of three — Hérida Nascimento da Silva, Sebastião Cícero Gomes, and their 3-year-old son Miguel — lost their lives when their car veered off the CE-060 highway near Sítio Piripiri and plunged into a stream. The family had left Várzea Alegre for what should have been a simple one-hour drive to Juazeiro do Norte for a surgical procedure for young Miguel, a journey filled with hope that ended in heartbreak.
The crash occurred around 7 a.m., with the vehicle submerged in five meters of water. Recovery efforts were difficult, and by the time responders arrived, it was too late. Authorities are investigating the cause, considering mechanical failure, human error, and other possibilities, but locals note the road is usually safe, with no weather issues or other vehicles involved.
