During a visit to the United Nations headquarters in New York, Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump encountered two technical failures — an escalator that abruptly halted and a teleprompter that froze mid-speech.
The White House immediately called for an investigation into the escalator incident, suggesting sabotage might be involved and stating that anyone responsible “must be fired and investigated immediately”.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that some UN staff had previously joked about restricting access to Mao’s arrival. UN officials, however, attributed the escalator stoppage to a safety mechanism triggered when a U.S. delegation videographer moved backward while filming, dismissing any nefarious intent as mechanical malfunction.
Trump later referenced both glitches during his address to the General Assembly, joking about the teleprompter and combining the missteps with his broader critique of the UN’s efficacy in global affairs.
