When drying clothes outdoors, especially on sunny days, it’s not uncommon for bees to be attracted to laundry, including underwear. This can be surprising, but there are natural explanations. Bees rely heavily on their sense of smell and are drawn to floral or fruity scents. Many detergents and fabric softeners mimic these scents, making freshly washed clothes appealing.
Other factors include moisture—slightly damp clothes can provide a water source for bees—and bright or light colors, which resemble flowers. Sun-warmed garments can also attract bees seeking heat. While bees are generally not aggressive, they may sting if disturbed, so it’s important to stay calm and avoid shaking or swatting the fabric.
To minimize attraction, use fragrance-free detergents, dry clothes indoors during peak bee activity, or hang laundry in shaded or screened areas. Gently move garments indoors using a stick or hanger if bees are present. These precautions keep clothes bee-free while respecting the important role bees play in the ecosystem.
