Rivets were invented in the 1870s by tailor Jacob Davis, who kept hearing complaints from workers whose pants tore easily. To strengthen high-stress areas like pockets and the fly, he added metal reinforcements. Partnering with Levi Strauss, he patented the riveted jean design in 1873, creating work pants tough enough for miners and laborers.
Rivets work by distributing tension in spots where fabric is most likely to rip. Made of sturdy, rust-resistant metals, they help jeans last much longer.
Over time, rivets evolved from a practical solution to a hallmark of authentic denim craftsmanship. While some modern jeans use reinforced stitching instead, traditional rivets remain a symbol of quality. A tiny detail—yet one with a big history.
