Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told Newsmax that once the government shutdown ends, House Republicans are preparing proposals to tackle rising healthcare costs. On Sept. 19, the House passed a clean continuing resolution 217-212 to fund the government through Nov. 21, but it stalled in the Senate amid disputes over Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, which are set to expire at year’s end.
Johnson, speaking on “The Record with Greta Van Susteren,” said House Republicans included measures in their One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) Act to lower premiums, but Democrats removed them during negotiations. “We are subsidizing very wealthy insurance companies, driving premiums higher,” Johnson said, adding the ACA has been “a broken and failing system since 2010.”
He noted the OBBB provision could have cut healthcare premiums by 12.7%, and criticized Democrats for opposing it. Johnson emphasized the need to address root causes of rising costs rather than relying solely on subsidies, promising Republicans will continue developing ideas to reduce healthcare expenses before the subsidies expire on Dec. 31.
