The B-2 Spirit has never been confirmed shot down, despite persistent rumors. Only two major crashes have occurred, and both were caused by technical issues—not enemy fire. The most significant incident happened on February 23, 2008 at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, when moisture in the aircraft’s sensors fed incorrect data to the flight computer. The bomber stalled during takeoff and crashed, though both pilots survived. Another mishap occurred in 2021 during a landing at Whiteman Air Force Base, again without hostile involvement.
Part of the reason shot-down rumors persist is the aircraft’s mysterious reputation. The B-2 is one of the hardest planes in the world to target due to its radar-absorbing materials, flying-wing design, low infrared signature, and advanced electronic countermeasures. Its radar cross-section is so small it can appear the size of a bird. With high-altitude missions and careful planning, the B-2 is engineered to avoid threats long before they detect it.
