Iran Tried to Sink a U.S. Aircraft

Tensions between Iran and the United States have been growing, but there is no confirmed report that Iran has tried to sink a U.S. aircraft. What is documented are a number of close military encounters and confrontations in recent years that reflect ongoing regional strain.

For example, Iranian state media reported that a naval helicopter confronted a U.S. Navy destroyer near Iranian-claimed waters in the Gulf of Oman, warning the vessel to alter its course during a tense exchange. The U.S. military, however, characterized the interaction as a calm, “professional” maneuver that did not disrupt operations. Additionally, past incidents include Iranian forces shooting down a U.S. surveillance drone over the Strait of Hormuz in 2019 during a period of heightened tensions, a move that nearly escalated into a larger confrontation.

Amid such flashpoints, both nations have repeatedly issued warnings and shown military readiness, with Iran saying it would treat any attack as an act of war and the U.S. bolstering its presence in the region to deter conflict. While episodes of brinkmanship persist, there is no verified evidence that Iran has attempted to sink an actual U.S. aircraft in direct combat.
