Noticing a fishy smell coming from the genital area can be uncomfortable, but it doesn’t always signal a serious problem. A mild odor that fades after bathing and changing clothes is often normal and can be influenced by sweat, hormones, or diet.
However, a strong or persistent fishy smell—especially when paired with itching, burning, irritation, or unusual discharge—may point to an underlying issue. One of the most common causes is bacterial vaginosis, a condition caused by an imbalance of natural bacteria. This often produces a noticeable odor and a thin gray or white discharge and typically requires medical treatment.
Sexually transmitted infections, such as trichomoniasis, can also cause a strong odor, along with discomfort. In some cases, a forgotten tampon may lead to a powerful, unpleasant smell that needs immediate attention.
To help prevent odor issues, practice gentle hygiene, avoid scented products or douching, wear breathable underwear, and seek medical care if symptoms persist or worsen.
