Strange “angry snakes” were spotted lurking high in a tree — or so it seemed at first glance. Three photos shared online showed winding, snake-like shapes that gave viewers chills… but they weren’t snakes at all.
Looking closer revealed an optical illusion created by the wings of Atlas moths, whose enormous patterned wings mimicked snake heads between the branches. The Atlas moth, native to Asian forests, is one of the world’s largest moths and is famous for its ability to camouflage itself.
When user Rob Allam posted the images, many were convinced they were seeing reptiles. Later, they realized the truth — the moths only mimic danger, they don’t cause it.
The discovery fascinated thousands of people and highlighted how easily our brains can misinterpret what we see. Sometimes, what appears threatening or strange is simply nature using its most incredible disguise.
