Beloved illustrator and BAFTA-winning producer Daniel Postgate was found dead in a shed at his Whitstable, England, home in June, aged 61. Reports revealed he had received a devastating letter from the NHS regarding his recent diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome, a form of blood cancer, just one day before his death.
Postgate had recently ended a 35-year relationship and had previously undergone intense treatment for aplastic anaemia in 2019. In a handwritten note to his family, he expressed fear that his illness could not be cured and urged them to “love each other” and have wonderful lives. His family told police he had “scrutinised every single word” of the NHS letter, which they believe contributed to his decision to end his life.
Two days before his death, he spoke with his brother Simon, who noted that Daniel had struggled with depression for around 40 years. Coroner Sarah Clarke concluded his death was intentional.
Postgate had taken over Smallfilms, the studio behind Bagpuss, and had been planning a 2027 cinema release. He will be deeply missed.
