A mother from Gold Coast sparked widespread debate after sharing her baby’s medical treatment online. Brooke Atkins chose to begin laser therapy for her infant son, Kingsley Atkins, who was born with a large port-wine stain birthmark covering part of his face.
Although this type of birthmark is often harmless, doctors explained that in some cases it can be associated with serious conditions such as Sturge-Weber syndrome and glaucoma. Because of these possible health risks, specialists recommended early laser treatment to help manage the condition and reduce potential complications as the child grows.
However, when Brooke documented the treatment on social media, she received strong criticism from people who believed the procedure was being done for cosmetic reasons. Some online users even called her a “monster,” accusing her of putting her child through unnecessary pain.

Despite the backlash, Brooke explained that the decision was made solely for her son’s health and future well-being. She emphasized that the treatment was recommended by medical professionals. At the same time, many supporters have sent encouraging messages, recognizing that her actions were motivated by concern for her child’s long-term health and quality of life.
