Graham Greene, the groundbreaking Canadian actor who redefined Indigenous representation in Hollywood, passed away on September 1, 2025, at 73 after a long illness. Born June 22, 1952, in Ohsweken, Ontario, on the Six Nations Reserve, he carried his Oneida Nation pride throughout his life.
Initially a roadie, Graham discovered acting by chance and rose to fame in 1990 as Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves, earning the first Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for an Indigenous performer. His career spanned over 180 credits, including Thunderheart, Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Green Mile, Transamerica, and Wind River, plus TV roles in Northern Exposure, Longmire, and Reservation Dogs.
Beyond acting, he championed authentic Indigenous stories, winning a Grammy, Gemini, and the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award. He is survived by his wife Hilary Blackmore, daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene, and grandson Tarlo. Graham’s legacy endures, inspiring generations and breaking barriers in film and television.
