A late-night crash on October 7 in Adams County, Indiana, turned tragic when a Jeep struck a horse-drawn Amish buggy on State Road 218 near Berne. The accident left the rural roadway chaotic, with the buggy shattered and the Jeep in a ditch.
The buggy carried nine people, including six juveniles. Seven were injured and transported to hospitals: driver Ruben L.M. Schwartz, 32, was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital, while Joseph L.M. Schwartz, 20, and five minors were taken to Parkview Hospital. Two others, including a 2-year-old and 32-year-old Saraetta L. Schwartz, declined treatment.
Authorities reported that the Jeep, driven by 33-year-old Bradley J. Ocilka of Kentucky, struck the buggy from behind. Ocilka underwent a blood draw but refused further medical care. No charges have been filed, and the investigation continues.
Emergency crews from multiple counties responded, managing victims and wreckage. The incident highlights the dangers horse-drawn buggies face on modern roads, especially at night, and officials urge drivers to exercise caution and respect these slow-moving vehicles.
