Justice Barrett Decries ‘Political Discourse’ Following Kirk Assassination

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett addressed the nation’s increasingly hazardous political climate following the fatal shooting of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk. Speaking on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” Barrett, a Trump appointee, emphasized that the murder reflects a culture where political discourse has “soured beyond control.”

She acknowledged the shooter was likely mentally ill but stressed that creating an environment in which political disagreements escalate into violence is unacceptable in the United States. Barrett highlighted the broader context of rising politically motivated incidents, including an attempted arson at Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence, the murder of Minnesota state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and two assassination attempts on former President Trump in 2024.

Coney Barrett, who learned of Kirk’s death while on Notre Dame’s campus, described the campus mood as “very somber.” She noted the tragedy was especially devastating given Kirk’s role as a father and husband, underscoring the urgent need for civil, respectful political discourse in the nation.
