Lately, my dog Rick began acting strangely—climbing onto the kitchen cabinets, growling, and barking at the ceiling. He was always calm and obedient, so his behavior unsettled me. For days, I assumed it was mice or some noise from the neighbors, but his insistence grew unbearable.
One night, after he barked nonstop, I finally grabbed a flashlight and climbed up to check. The ventilation grille above the cabinets was loose. Expecting to find a small animal, I removed it—and froze. Inside the dark vent, a man was hiding. His face was pale and filthy, his eyes wild with fear. In his trembling hands, he held stolen items: a wallet, a phone, a keychain.
Shaking, I called 911. Police arrived quickly and pulled him out—thin, injured, and terrified. Investigators soon learned he had been living in the building’s ventilation system, sneaking into apartments through the ducts to steal small valuables. My loyal dog had sensed what none of us could.
