A tragic incident occurred on February 15, 2023, when a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the Tennessee National Guard crashed during a training exercise near Huntsville, Alabama. The crash resulted in the deaths of two experienced pilots, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Daniel Wadham and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Danny Randolph, both with over a decade of military service.
The helicopter was conducting a scheduled training flight when it rapidly descended and crashed on Alabama Highway 53, igniting upon impact. Remarkably, no injuries were reported on the ground. A U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center team is leading the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of military training flights. In response, the Pentagon has ordered a temporary halt to flights by the involved unit, the 12th Aviation Battalion from Fort Belvoir, pending the outcome of the investigation. The crash adds to a series of recent Black Hawk helicopter accidents during training exercises, highlighting the inherent risks associated with military aviation.
