Mark Harmon is honoring former NCIS showrunner George Schenck, who died Aug. 3 at age 82. Schenck, alongside writing partner Frank Cardea, joined NCIS in Season 1, later becoming executive producers and co-showrunners in Season 14 before Schenck’s 2018 retirement. Harmon, who starred as Leroy Jethro Gibbs for 19 seasons, praised their “professionalism and tenacity,” saying they “changed the face of the show.”
Harmon now serves as narrator and executive producer for the upcoming spinoff NCIS: Origins, premiering Oct. 14 and starring Austin Stowell as young Gibbs. His son, Sean Harmon—who once portrayed young Gibbs—sparked the idea and also serves as executive producer. Harmon says he’s happy to support the new cast while stepping back from a leading role.
