Drivers over 70 automatically lose C1 (vehicles 3,500kg–7,500kg) and D1 (minibuses) entitlements unless they submit a D2 application form and a D4 medical report. Full C licence holders may also need to retake tests to continue driving heavy vehicles. Younger drivers can apply for provisional C1 but must pass the driving test first.
Retirees relying on motorhomes for holidays face particular risk. Without completing the required paperwork, their C1 entitlement is suspended, leaving them unable to drive certain vehicles until medical clearance is granted.
