Ten gestures that Shih Tzus use to ‘talk’ to you.

Shih Tzus are expressive dogs that communicate affection through many small behaviors rather than obvious signals. One common gesture is following their owner everywhere — from room to room — simply to stay close. They also rest their head or paw on you, a quiet way of asking for attention and showing trust.

Another sign of attachment is the gentle stare. When a Shih Tzu looks directly at you with relaxed eyes, it’s a form of bonding similar to a hug. Licking hands or face is also typical; for them it represents care, familiarity, and comfort. Many will roll onto their back and expose their belly, which shows they feel safe around you.

Excited tail wagging, especially combined with small jumps, usually means genuine happiness when you arrive home. Bringing toys is another affectionate act — they want interaction, not just play. Some lean their body against your legs or sleep pressed beside you, seeking warmth and reassurance.

They may also sigh softly while resting near you, a sign they are calm and content. Even sitting quietly at your feet reflects loyalty. These small gestures together reveal how strongly Shih Tzus attach to their owners and how they naturally express love every day.
