The town of Lott, Texas, is grieving the loss of 18-year-old junior rodeo champion Ace Patton Ashford, who died in a tragic horse-related accident on August 12. While tending to a sick calf near Chilton, a nearby horse was spooked, tangling Ace’s leg and dragging him across an open field. First responders found him with a pulse but severe head injuries; he later died at Baylor Scott & White Hospital.
A Rosebud-Lott High School graduate, Ace had earned a scholarship to Hill College and was set to join its rodeo team this fall. A talented roper since age 4, he had recently achieved major wins at the World Youth Team Roping Championship, The Patriot, and Philipp Ranch.
Known for his manners, skill with horses, and humble nature, he was admired by all. Ace is survived by his family, including his brother Ross Ashford, and his longtime girlfriend, Sydney Boatright, who called him “forever.”
