The high school gym buzzed with whispers as a crowd circled Anna, a small, quiet girl no one had ever noticed. In the center, the school’s strongest, most arrogant student — the feared team captain — loomed over her.
“Get on your knees and apologize,” he demanded, smirking.
Anna’s hands trembled in her hoodie pockets. “I haven’t done anything wrong,” she whispered.
“Then who ratted me out to the principal?” he snapped. The crowd chuckled, expecting her humiliation.
Anna lowered her head, and for a moment, it seemed she’d comply. Then her shoulders straightened, her eyes icy and piercing. Even the bully stepped back.
“Do you really want me to kneel?” she asked calmly. She reached into her pocket and revealed a gleaming metal badge.
“Nice to meet you. I’m an intern with the juvenile division. I didn’t come here to study. I came for you.”
The gym fell silent. The confident bully paled. Now it was his turn.
