One morning, I noticed a bright orange blotch on my favorite gray towel — so vivid it looked like someone had marked it with neon paint. I assumed it was a rust stain and tossed it in the wash, but the mark stayed. Soon, more towels, pillowcases, and shirts developed similar orange spots. After weeks of frustration, I learned the real cause: benzoyl peroxide, a common acne-treatment ingredient. It doesn’t add color — it bleaches fabric dyes, leaving permanent orange or yellow patches that can’t be washed out.
I also discovered that iron in water can cause rusty stains, while some hair or cleaning products contain bleaching agents that damage fabrics over time. To prevent future marks, I began using white or older towels when applying skincare, ensuring products dried completely before contact, and installed a water filter to reduce iron.
Now, when I see an orange mark, I don’t panic — I recognize the cause, act accordingly, and keep my fabrics looking their best.
