Scientists discover unexpected side effect of regular masturbation

For many years, men were encouraged to suppress sexual release, believing that abstinence could improve strength, fertility, or overall health. However, emerging scientific research is beginning to challenge that long-standing idea. New findings suggest that going long periods without ejaculation may not enhance fertility as once thought—in fact, it could gradually have the opposite effect.

When sperm remain stored in the body for extended periods, they may begin to deteriorate. Studies indicate that older sperm can lose motility, become less viable, and accumulate higher levels of DNA damage. Rather than “building up” quality, prolonged abstinence may reduce the chances of successful fertilization.

Recent large-scale analyses, involving tens of thousands of men, support this shift in understanding. These studies have found that extended gaps between ejaculations are often associated with poorer sperm performance, including reduced movement and survival rates. On the other hand, more regular ejaculation—whether through sexual activity or masturbation—may help clear out aging sperm and allow the body to produce newer, healthier cells.

The potential advantages may extend beyond fertility. Long-term research from Harvard suggests that men who ejaculate more frequently could have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer, pointing toward broader health benefits.
